Xi'an, anciently known as Chang'an and Haojing, is a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Shaanxi Province. It is the capital of Shaanxi Province, a sub-provincial city, a megacity, a national central city, the core city of Xi'an Metropolitan Area and Guanzhong Plain City Cluster, an important central city in the western region of China, and an important scientific research, education and industrial base of the country, as confirmed by the State Council.

Xi'an is a "World Historic City" identified by UNESCO in 1981, one of the important birthplaces of Chinese civilization and the Chinese nation, the starting point of the Silk Road, and the capital of 13 dynasties in history. Xi'an is a world-famous historical city, along with the world-famous Rome, Athens, Cairo and other ancient cities, and is also one of the six ancient capitals of China with the longest history of capitalization. The city of Xi'an is one of the best tourist destinations in China and one of the cities with the best international image in China. The city of Xi'an has the highest density of colleges and universities and the largest number of people receiving higher education in China, and has an important position in the country, being one of the five major centers of education and scientific research in China. There are 2 colleges and universities under the "985 Project" and 7 colleges and universities under the "211 Project" (including the Air Force Medical University), as well as other colleges and universities with specialized characteristics, such as Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts, Xi'an Conservatory of Music, and Xi'an Institute of Physical Education and Sports. The strength of private colleges and universities in Xi'an is also not to be underestimated, in the "Alumni Association 2018 China's top 150 private universities rankings" in the top 30 Xi'an accounted for 5, of which Eurasia is listed in the country's fourth, Peihua is listed in the country's ninth place.
